How Is A Plate Destroyed Or Canceled?

The conventional practice of destroying a plate was adopted to protect the collector against misrepresentation about the number of prints issued. This does not mean that the plate is literally demolished. The image is altered in such a manner as to be incapable of rendering any more prints. This Collagraphic plate has had a coating applied to the surface, filling in the recesses in the plate in such a manner that ink will no longer adhere to the plate, thus making it impossible to print.
